June 22, 2011 at 12:00pm: Our luncheon speaker was General Counsel for Catholic Heathcare West Derek Covert, Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Catholic Healthcare West, who spoke to us on the timely topic of "Challenges Facing Catholic Health Care in the United States." In his role at CHW, Mr. Covert not only heads its civil law activities, he also leads the organization's efforts when canon law and moral theological issues arise.
May 26, 2011 at 12:00pm: Our luncheon speaker was San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera. Mr. Herrera, a graduate of Villanova law, is a Catholic who has headed what has been called one of the most aggressive and talented municipal law departments in the nation for nearly ten years.
April 28, 2011 at 12:00pm: Our luncheon speaker was Rev. Cornelius M. Buckley, S.J., who addressed the many challenges facing Catholic lawyers in today's society. Fr. Buckley presently serves as a Chaplain at S.t Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula.
Chrism Mass at St. Mary's Catedral, April 19, 2011: The Most Reverent George Niederauer, Archbishop of San Francisco, extended his invitation to all members of the Society to attend the annual Chrism Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral on April 19, 2011 (the Tuesday of Holy Week) at 5:30 pm.
2011 Lenten Series: The St. Thomas More Society's popular Lenten Series presented by Don Carroll returned this year with a six week reflection on the Passion and Death of Jesus.
March 24, 2011: Our luncheon speaker was Rev. Michael Sweeney, O.P., President Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, Berkeley. Fr. Sweeney discussed "The Common Good, Rights, and the Natural Law.
Friends Write: The annual Silent Retreat for Men and Women in the Legal Profession, "Encountering God in All Seasons," at the Jesuit Retreat Center in Los Altos was held March 11-13, 2011.
February 17, 2011: Our luncheon speaker was California State Senator Dr. Leland L. Yee.
January 27, 2011: Our luncheon speaker was San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon.
December 16, 2010: Christmas Luncheon.
November 15, 2010: Pastors Luncheon. This was a special luncheon where every member is encouraged to invite your pastor or other parish priests as our guests. Our speaker was the noted scholar and writer, Sister Sandra Schneiders of the Jesuit School of Theology at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, who addressed the role of and issues facing women religious in the United States today.
Red Mass:
September 29, 2010: Theology on Tap Jeff Brand and Fr. Donal Godfrey led an interesting discussion at The Holding Company on September 29th occasioned by the recent beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman. Our next Theology on Tap discussion is likely to be centered on the Death Penalty. Watch for announcements.
September 23, 2010: Our September Luncheon speaker at which we honored our past St. Thomas More Award recipients and Past Presidents was Bishop William Justice who gave a most thought provoking talk on the topic of “Unity in a Fractured Society.” Bishop Justice has been fully engaged this year with our society, having presided over our special Red Mass at the ABA convention in August, speaking at our September luncheon and agreeing to be the principal celebrant at our annual Red Mass this month. We are most grateful to our wonderful Auxiliary Bishop Justice.
August 8, 2010: During the American Bar Association convention to be held in San Francisco, we sponsored a special Red Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral at the 9 a.m. Sunday Mass. The celebrant was Auxiliary Bishop William Justice. The Cathedral choir sang traditional Gregorian Chants. After the Mass, our Society hosted a reception in the meeting rooms below the Cathedral.
June 17, 2010: Our speaker at our June Luncheon was Father Jay Matthews, pastor of St. Benedict's Parish in Oakland. Father Matthews gave a most fascinating and informative talk on the history of the Catholic African-American community in the Civil Rights movement, from the end of the Civil War until the middle of the 20th century.

May 27, 2010: Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone of the Diocese of Oakland who will share with us his experience as an assistant at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the Church's highest canonical court in the Vatican and its important role in the governance of the Church.

Tuesday, April 27, 2010: Theology on Tap. Once again we enjoyed the combination of a no-host bar and stimulating conversation at our Theology on Tap session. On Tuesday April 27, USF Dean Jeff Brand and Father Donal Godfrey, SJ. moderated a discussion at the Holding Company in Embarcadero 2 starting at 5:30 pm. The program sought comments on the subject of "Faith perspectives on the current crisis in the Vatican regarding criticism over the Church's handling of clergy abuse."
April 22, 2010: At our April luncheon, through the efforts of Board member Tom Hockel, we had as our speaker the noted theologian Father Joseph Fessio, S.J. Father Fessio focused his talk on the recent media regarding the clergy abuse scandal, especially in the light of all the recent adverse publicity against Pope Benedict XVI. We had a lively and informative discussion and were fortunate to hear Father Fessio's insights on this controversial and troubling subject.
Following shortly after the April luncheon, we continued the discussion of dealing with the publicity about clergy abuse and the difficulty it presents to the faithful at a lively Theology on Tap discussion led by Dean Jeff Brand and Father Donal Godfrey. April 10, 2010: Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland. The theme was "Catholic lawyers, the laity, and family". Presenting to us was Father Frank Filice, Professor Emeritus of Biology at USF and founder ofthe Holy Family Oratory of St. Philip Neri. Ordained after his wife died, he is the father of six, grandfather of twenty-two (one of whom is now a priest also) and great grandfather of twelve. He is a great inspiration to those who know him.
Thursday, March 25, 2010: Our member Stephen Lanctot will present a program about the Immaculate Conception Academy in the Mission - a high school which is following the Cristo Rey model.

Cathleen Kaveny serves as the John P. Murphy Foundation Professor of Law and Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. As a columnist for Commonwealth Magazine and as a scholar, Kaveny explores the relationship between morality and law, reconciling and analyzing the role religion and ethics in current events. Kaveny takes on controversial issues from an interdisciplinary perspective, confronting issues ranging from torture and medical conscience clauses to Catholic academic freedom and electoral politics. A decorated scholar, Kaveny has published over forty articles and essays, served as a clerk under the Honorable John T. Noonan Jr., and earned her undergraduate and multiple graduate degrees in philosophy, theology and law from Princeton and Yale, respectively.

We presented the award winning essay from our annual essay contest and also heard from Tim Crudo (formerly with the US Department of Justice office in SF and currently with Latham & Watkins) and Angelina Cahalan of St. Anthony's Foundation about a new opportunity for STMS members to become involved in a community service project. We also presented a proposal to expand the STMS Board for your approval.

Dean of the USF Law School, Jeff Brand, and Director of Ministry at USF, Fr. Donal Godfrey. They discussied "Jewish Prophets, Catholic Saints, Faith and Our Lives As Lawyers" from Dean Brand's perspective as a Jew and Fr. Godfrey's perspective as an Irish lawyer.

Thursday, June 18, 2009. Doug Sherman of Immaculate Heart Radio was our luncheon speaker. Today, Immaculate Heart Radio stations minister to millions of listeners with 22 stations throughout the western United States, including the San Francisco Bay Area on KSFB 1260 AM.
Thursday, May 28, 2009. Noted Catholic convert and author Roy Schoeman was our luncheon speaker, who gave a fascinating account of his conversion and an inspirational view of the scripture and theology. Our thanks go out to Tom Hockel and his father whose generosity and initiative allowed us to feature Mr. Schoeman.

Thursday, April 16, 2009. Fr. John Coleman, SJ was our luncheon speaker. Fr. Coleman is currently associate pastor at Saint Ignatius Church, San Francisco, and was the Charles Casassa Professor of Social Values at Loyola Marymount University from 1997 to 2009.
The title of his talk was "The Theological Roots of the Criminal Trial." We provided MCLE credit for his talk and had a very good turn out. Fr. Coleman discussed some very interesting history and issues involving "reasonable doubt" and other concepts. His comments prompted a lively and lengthy question and answer session. Our thanks go out to Fr. Coleman.

Thursday, March 19, 2009. David Cook, a lawyer and former FBI agent, who is now Director of Intelligence Service for Deloitte. David provided us with some rare insights, humor and assurances about the history of the FBI's conter-intelligence efforts in San Francisco (as well as with respect to his own identity). The talk was highly entertaining and informative. Our thanks go out to David.
Wednesday, February 25, 2009. Auxiliary Bishop William Justice celebrated Mass and distributed ashes at the Cesar Chavez Student Center, Rosa Parks A-C in the SFSU campus. The Sacrament of Reconciliation was offered from 11:10 to 11:50 am, and Mass was at 12:00.
February 19, 2009 - Our luncheon speakers were from the Coalition of Concerned Medical Professionals. CCMP board member Michaele Ramirez and one of the many CCMP medical professional voluteers spoke about CCMP's efforts to assure there is medical and dental care to the ever growing number of Californians (8 million currently) without medical insurance.
January 22, 2009 - Our luncheon speaker was Chris Cody, formerly a personal injury lawyer and now Executive Director of St. Vincent DePaul. He provided us all with much inspiration and motivation.
